QR code not working? How to fix it
Most QR problems come down to two things: the code cannot be read, or it can be read but leads nowhere. Here is how to find out which, and what to do.

1. It scans, but opens an error or "upgrade" page
This is the most common problem with codes from online generators. The code is dynamic: it goes through the generator's short link, and the free trial or subscription has ended. Fix: make a new static code that points directly to your page, and replace the printed one. You can confirm the cause with our QR checker.
2. The page it points to no longer exists
The code is fine, but the website moved or the page was deleted. Fix: restore the page or set up a redirect from the old address on your own website.
3. Not enough contrast
Light codes on light backgrounds, or codes in similar colors, are hard for cameras to read. Inverted codes (light on dark) also fail on some phones. Fix: use a dark code on a light background.
4. Printed too small
A code that is too small for the scanning distance will not focus. Fix: use about 1 cm of code for every 10 cm of distance, and never less than 2 × 2 cm. A poster read from 3 meters needs about 30 × 30 cm.
5. No white border
QR codes need an empty margin around them, called the quiet zone. If a design or frame touches the code, phones cannot find its edges. Fix: leave a white border at least four modules wide. Codes from QRNoExpiry include it.
6. Blurry or damaged print
Low resolution images, scratches, folds or glare on glossy material can break a code. Fix: print from an SVG or PDF file, use a matte finish, and choose a higher damage tolerance for outdoor use.
7. Too much content or a large logo
Long texts make the pattern dense, and a big logo can cover too much of it. Fix: shorten the link or text, and use a logo of about a fifth of the code width with 30% damage tolerance.
Always test before printing
Scan the final file with at least two different phones, ideally one iPhone and one Android, before you print many copies.
Questions
Why does my QR code open an upgrade or error page?
It is a dynamic code whose free trial or subscription has ended. Make a new static code that points straight to your page.
What is the minimum size for a QR code?
About 2 × 2 cm for close scanning, and roughly 1 cm of code for every 10 cm of scanning distance.
Can a QR code work if part of it is damaged?
Yes, up to a point. QR codes have error correction that can recover 7% to 30% of a damaged pattern, depending on the level chosen when the code was made.
